Essentially new antibiotic

November 3rd, 2008

American scientists have created antibiotic, which does not allow to bacteria to distinguish human body. The “deceived” microbes do not allocate toxins and transit pass through intestines of the person, “believing” that are in the environment.
Scientists from the Southwest medical centre at Texas University have found out, that bacteria E. coli, Salmonella, and Francisella tularensis (the tularemia activator) distinguish human body by means of the special receptor, reacting to such hormones as adrenaline and noradrenalinum. Thus virulent genes of bacteria get activated and infectious process is started, microbe toxins, start to form.
The antibiotic under name LED209 blocks this receptor, not killing a bacterium, but doing them harmless.
Vanessa Sperandio, the head of research, and her colleagues have tested antibiotic LED209 on the mice, infected with a salmonellosis, tularemia or intestinal infection, caused by E. сoli. Treatment has appeared effective. It was found out, that some hours after infection the animals, receiving a medicine, felt better and survived much more often than those, who received placebo. Besides, no serious by-effects have been registered.
